Venue

The workshop will take place at the University of Crete. The campus is approximately 8km south-west of the center of Heraklion.

Taxi (shared and free for participants) will start every day at 8:30 am from Atlantis hotel.

Getting to Heraklion By Air

Nikos Kazantzakis airport (airport code: HER) can be reached by direct flights from many European cities. They are frequent flights daily from Athens (and other major Greek cities) of Aegean Airlines, Skyexpress (both very good) and other airlines. Flight time to/from Athens is approximately 50min.
Airport to city center. From Heraklion airport you may either use public transportation (bus, for 1,20 euros) or a taxi (about 15 euros). The bus works fine (but get a taxi if you want to go faster or if the bus does not take you close to your hotel).

Getting to Heraklion By Sea

Luxury ferries sail from Piraeus (Athens) to Heraklion every evening. Departure from Piraeus is typically at 9pm with arrival to Heraklion at 7am in the next morning. For precise schedule and fares please check: Minoan Lines, ANEK lines and Bluestar ferries. We recommend that you book a bed in a cabin and enjoy a trip in the Archipelago drinking, dining, shopping etc in the ferry.
Port to city center. The port is located 1.2km from the city center. You may either take a taxi or opt for a walk to your hotel.

Culture in the city

• Byzantine icons museum.
• Historical museum of Crete.
• City art gallery.
• City concert hall: Ballet "Zorbas" (31/5/2025).
• The obvious: Archeological museum. Minoan palaces in Knossos, Malia, Festos.

Public transportation

There are two bus lines to the University campus. Ticket vending machines are located next to most bus stations. You can also buy tickets from kiosks around the city. A convenient bus stop is located outside Capsis Astoria Hotel at Eleftherias Square.

While you may also find other hotels (more economical or more luxurious).
Airbnb. There are many good quality apartments. At the moment, they seem quite cheaper than hotels of corresponding quality. (I can give more advice upon request.)
Apartment groups. There are many small hotels or groups of apartments that are typically offered on airbnb, booking.com or even independently.
